Waking up dormant HIV

http://www.brightsurf.com/news/headlines/22822/Waking_up_dormant_HIV.html

HAART (highly active anti-retroviral therapy) has emerged as an extremely effective HIV treatment that keeps virus levels almost undetectable; however, HAART can never truly eradicate the virus as some HIV always remains dormant in cells. But, a chemical called suberoylanilide hydroxamic acid (SAHA), recently approved as a leukemia drug, has now been shown to 'turn on' latent HIV, making it an attractive candidate to weed out the hidden virus that HAART misses. the researchers examined whether SAHA had any effect on HIV latency. They found that SAHA could indeed stimulate latent HIV to begin replicating, which exposes the infected cell to HAART drugs. SAHA could activate HIV in both laboratory cells as well as from blood samples taken from HIV patients on antiretroviral therapy. Most importantly, this successful activation was achieved using clinical doses of SAHA, suggesting toxicity will not be a problem.

This article was interesting because it was on the topic of HIV medicines. The article was also, for the most part, written understandably and not too complexly. It was brief and to the point, so there were not unnecessary details included.

He could have explained more about both treatments. Also, he could have explained more about what the treatments do to HIV.

In this article, i learned that there are current treatments underway for HIV.

3 Well presented aspects:
1) the article in itself was in my opinion poorly written with complicated language, but Steven summarized it accurately in a much more understandable way.

2)The HIV topic is always interesting to read about as its such a mystery to us, and any further advancements in the topic are always helpful to know about.

1) I think the way Steven presented the possible effects of the different treatments and how they might possibly help HIV patients. This was the most clearly presented point of the review in my opinion.

2 Things that could have been done better.

2) I would have liked to have known a bit more about the individual medicines. For example what SAHA was was not explained and how it aided leukemia patients before would have also been helpful to know.

1) It would have also been helpful to know weather scientists, or Steven specifically, think such treatments can make breakthroughs in cracking the HIV virus.

One thing I was impressed with

Once again, it's always interesting to learn about breakthroughs made in cracking the worlds most mysterious virus. It seems that the article that Steven shared with us is presenting an idea that this SAHA which was previously used for helping leukemia patients, might also be a link to help cure the worlds deadliest virus once and for all. Only further research will tell.

This article was very interesting due to the current issues with HIV. It was also very well written and very information because ti was right to the point.

What would have made this better was to explain more about what the medicine does that makes it work. Also, I would have liked to know the opinion of a scientist on the drug and its effectiveness.

I learned from this summary and article that scientists are closer to finding a cure for HIV.

This topic was extremely interesting. The fact that it was on HIV medicines was cool. I enjoyed learning about it. His summary of it was very easy to understand. I didn't need to reread anything for clarification. The unnecessary details were cut out so I got all the information I needed to get.
Information regarding what HIV is and what can be done to stop it could've been mentioned. The specific treatments could have been outlined.
From his summary and the article I learned what treatments are going on in order to help with HIV and what medicine is being provided.

2 Areas for Improvement:
1. Summary contained some terms such as "Latent HIV" which were left undefined.
2. Article is from a somewhat sketchy website - a more reputable site might be recommended for the source.
1 Interesting new Fact:
1. It is interesting to learn that the HIV virus can survive so long thanks to its ability to enter a dormant state.

3 aspects well presented:
- right to the point

- easy to understand

2 suggestions:
- you could tell us about the opinions of the industries that produce medicines to maintain the HIV inside of the people without affecting the same, because a discover like that could ruin millions of industries in the planet.
- you could explain how does the chemical SAHA destroy the HIV virus

1 thing learned:
-After a long time looking for a cure to the HIV virus, finally the scientists discovered chemicals that are really close to eradicate the HIV virus.
